My Most Important Lesson of 2020

My life changed in October 2020 when I heard John Corner tell me that eliminating hurry is the very best way to cultivate health in my soul. As he explained how hurry destroys the best of life, I replayed a series of my worst moments and found that some manner of hurry influenced each one. In a hurry to go somewhere, I’ve been sharp with my kids rather than enjoying them or showing patience. In a hurry to finish a difficult conversation, I’ve been callous toward my wife and unwilling or unable to really hear and understand her. In a hurry to achieve certain goals, I was moving too fast to see what was really important, to connect with those I love most, and to experience closeness with God. Hurry erodes peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, wisdom, self-control, compassion, love, and the ability to experience beauty. While I may still move with fast, determined action, I pray that I’ll do so without hurry in my mind and soul. I want to be like well-trained athletes who do the right things at the right time at amazing speed to achieve amazing outcomes while their minds remain calmly present, aware, and controlled. I’m convinced that eliminating hurry will clear the path to overcome all my greatest challenges in life.

If this resonates with you, I highly recommend John Comer’s book, The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry, for more thorough treatment and some practical tips. May 2021 be your least hurried and your best year ever.
